Xolani Radebe
Mechanical Engineer || Software Developer
I’m a mechanical engineer and software developer with an interest in building things that solve problems. My background is in mechanical engineering, but over the years I’ve found myself working more and more at the intersection of engineering, software and technology. I currently work as a developer in banking while continuing my MSc in Mechanical Engineering. I enjoy taking an idea, understanding the problem behind it, and figuring out how to turn it into something that actually works. That could be a software solution, an engineering system, a prototype or simply a better way of doing something. Outside of my day-to-day work, I’m involved in a few projects and ideas of my own, particularly around technology, engineering, drones, robotics and solutions that can have a practical impact in Africa. I’m still learning, still building and still figuring out where the journey takes me. For me, engineering and technology have always been less about having all the answers and more about being willing to solve the problem in front of me.

Experience
- Aug 2024 — Jan 2025Intern Mechanical EngineerSANDVIK · Gauteng
I conduct laboratory testing and validation, including test setup and design. I created and prepared samples and prototypes. I ensured samples are produced to specification by suppliers. I supported various departments with the collection and distribution of samples and product requests. I build and assemble prototypes, including performing general workshop processes such as welding, milling, and cutting. I liaised with relevant departments, such as sales, quality, and production, as needed. I maintained the accuracy and quality of all general technical activities. I created and managed documentation using Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Analyze data and report on specified activities and processes. I embraced a culture of continuous improvement to contribute to the company's overall vision and goals. I supported and assisted with general and daily activities as needed. I liaised effectively with production operators and supervisors.
Education
- Jan 2017 — Dec 2024BSc Mechanical EngineeringUnversitry of the Witwatersrand
Achieved first position in the 2021 Mechanical Engineering Laboratory Design Challenge, where my team designed and built a functional miniature wind tunnel. Applied 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining and mechanical design principles to develop the prototype. Co-developed a COVID-19 screening drone concept aimed at using aerial technology to assist with screening large groups of people. Successfully developed elements including computer vision, facial recognition, pose detection and autonomous drone flight. Received media recognition from Wits University and Engineering News for engineering innovation and drone development. Co-founded an aviation venture in 2019, exploring drone technology and aerospace engineering. Completed research on neural network-based PID tuning for a nonlinear ball-and-plate system. Compared Neural Network, Ziegler-Nichols and MATLAB Autotune controller tuning methods through simulation and experimental validation. Research subsequently published in the SACAM 2025 Conference Proceedings. Student Entrepreneurship and Innovation Received a Certificate of Recognition for Student Entrepreneurship from the Wits Innovation Centre in April 2024. Explored technology-driven solutions through engineering projects and entrepreneurial initiatives. Served as a Mechatronics and Computer-Aided Design tutor at Wits. Assisted students with robotics, control systems, programming, sensor integration and engineering design.
